Description
This path crosses the eastern caldera slopes, beginning at Nikia and ending at Fylakio . The geological highlights of this path are the Nikia lava flow and ramp structures, predominant in the first half of the path, and also the large andesitic lava flows that constitute the steep slopes, near the end of the path, below Fylakio (guardhouse)
In the beginning of the path, you will find the Monastery of Ag. Ioannis Theologos, having a highly interesting bell tower from chiseled lava. A lava neck predominates the middle of the stretch; this forms the Parletia tump, one of the Medieval castles of Nisyros, where some wreckage and cisterns remain intact.
The name “Parletia” probably derives from “parlare” the italian verb for “speak” and it is possible that this castle was in use to gather allies to organize defense and the control of this part of sea during the middle age and the St. John knights occupation; this building had this use because good protect and safe from outside attacks(this is my personal opinion, nothing that i checked)
Starting your hike from Fylakio, you will conclude your way at the Nisyros Volcanological Museum, housed in the restored Elementary School of Nikia.
The traditional coffee shops in the magnificent, unique central square in Nikia will provide comfort and enjoyment; a walk in the village’s alleys will reveal its very interesting architecture.
From Filakio is possible to walk to Lies beach and from there up again toward Monastery Kyra and again on the main road to Nikia
