A monastery complex consisting of a small temple, single chamber structure and seven small buildings constructed from local stone. It is possible that in ancient times, this site constituted a temple devoted to the Nymphs, protectors of water.
The path ascending the hill opposite to the temple devoted to Nymfios Christ, is ridden with ancient structures, pools, building foundations, floors, vase fragments from various historic periods and several ‘cisterns’.
Perhaps this is why this hill has been christened ‘Visternia’. In a gigantic rock located on the eastern part of the small plateau of Nyfios, a cave with colons is carved in rock. after the cave is accessed by descending several stone steps. This cave today serves as a Christian temple dedicated to Agios Ioannis Kalyvitis.
The relics of an ancient structure, including beam receptacles carved in rock, are preserved opposite to the cave. The entry to the Nyfios complex is predominated by a horn-shaped stone carving, located to the left.
This is possibly a relic of Minoan colonization of the island, as dictated by its shape (identical to the ones found in Minoan Crete), its orientation (east-west) and placement at the inlet of the Nyfios plateau.
